I am eternally thankful to my parents for taking me from the Ukraine and bringing me here to the USA when I was 6 years old.

Don't remember much but this sticks out in my mind: our apartment building was made of concrete brick that was painted red. Current pictures show all the neighborhood faded into its natural gray. The neighborhood were organized in blocks around a central common ground that was near-dead trees and long-dead grass. There was a "basketball" court that never received any baskets/backboards. I remember waiting in line early mornings with my mom for bread and milk.

Sometimes fish was delivered to the plaza outside the local grocer and was sold to waiting masses directly from large tank trucks. Same with kvass (fermented bread beverage, yummy).

For picture day at school we had retired circus bears (see attached pic, i'm not even joking)

That's so cute! Those bears must have imprinted on you. Made you inexplicably drawn to dancing bears.
